Into Light

Into Light was written for saxophonist John Sampen. This version is for chamber orchestra and tape. The piece exists in a version for band without tape as well. Organized in five sections, the piece starts with a slow, reasonant space tied directly to the saxophone soloist. As the work unfolds, the accompaniment develops more independence and the soloist becomes more and more agitated. Percussive textures start to intrude and take over the texture. The last section explodes into a rhythmic ostinato in alternating 5/8 and 7/8 leading to a climactic, propulsive finish. The work was premiered by Jeffrey Benedict and the University of Texas at Austin New Music Ensemble, Dan Welcher, conductor.
